Gunn began his professional film work at Troma, where the practical demands of low-budget production gave him experience across writing, shooting and editing. That background encouraged a direct approach to genre: horror could be disgusting and funny at the same time, while a ridiculous premise could still contain sincere feeling. He later wrote screenplays for projects including Scooby-Doo and the remake of Dawn of the Dead, showing that his voice could be adjusted for very different audiences. Slither, his feature directing debut, mixed alien-invasion horror with body effects, small-town characters and uncomfortable comedy. Super used the idea of a homemade superhero to examine loneliness, violence and self-justification. The Suicide Squad allowed Gunn to apply the ensemble method to a more violent and politically cynical group. The film gives apparently disposable characters enough personality that danger has weight. Peacemaker continues one character into television, using a longer format to examine his beliefs, family history and need for approval. Gunn wrote and directed key episodes, linking comedy, action and music in a form suited to weekly character development. His later appointment as co-chair and co-chief executive of DC Studios expanded his responsibility from individual productions to a connected screen strategy. That role includes decisions about story continuity, casting and how film, television and animation relate. It should be separated from his personal directing style: not every DC project will be a James Gunn film. His importance now comes from both making stories and helping create the conditions in which other filmmakers make theirs.

Slither and Super show the smaller, rougher work that formed Gunn's voice. Guardians of the Galaxy demonstrates how that voice changed inside a large studio film.
