Tim Allen

Allen developed his public style through stand-up before Home Improvement made him a television star. The sitcom built Tim Taylor around interests already present in his comedy, especially tools, machines and exaggerated ideas about masculinity. Tim hosts a home-improvement programme inside the show, but his confidence regularly exceeds his judgment. The humour comes from accidents and misunderstandings, while the family scenes give those jokes a consequence. Allen's performance works because Tim is not simply foolish. He wants to solve problems and care for his family, even when pride makes him approach both badly. The series ran for eight seasons and became one of the defining American family comedies of the 1990s. Buzz Lightyear is Allen's most recognisable voice role. In the first Toy Story, Buzz believes he is a real space ranger rather than a toy. Allen plays that certainty seriously, which makes the gap between Buzz's belief and reality funny. When the character understands the truth, the voice performance changes from formal authority to disappointment and then friendship. Later films develop Buzz as a loyal member of the group while keeping his tendency toward mission language and heroic poses. Voice acting limits the tools available to a performer, but Allen's firm delivery gives the animators a clear personality to build around. Galaxy Quest offers a related live-action variation: an actor associated with a television space hero is forced to become useful in a real crisis. Both roles make fun of heroic certainty while retaining affection for the character.

Allen returned to a regular sitcom lead with Last Man Standing, playing a father and sporting-goods executive navigating family and workplace change. The role is different from Tim Taylor but again uses a confident viewpoint that meets resistance at home.
