Streaming platform guide

Hulu

Hulu is a United States streaming service owned by The Walt Disney Company. It offers current and older television, films, original productions and, through separate plans, live television channels. Hulu has traditionally been strongest as a home for American television, including recent episodes and full seasons from broadcast and cable brands. It can be purchased on its own or through eligible bundles, and its plans may include advertising. Hulu should not be confused with Hulu Japan, which is a separately operated service with its own catalogue and subscriptions. This guide focuses on the US platform, its history and the choices viewers need to understand before signing up.

In-depth guide

How Hulu developed

Hulu was founded in 2007 and opened its public website in 2008. It began as a way to watch television online with advertising and support from major American media companies. A paid service, Hulu Plus, followed in 2010 and expanded access to full series and more devices. Hulu later invested in original programmes and added a commercial-free choice. In 2017 it launched Hulu + Live TV, combining an on-demand library with live news, sport and entertainment channels. Disney took operational control in 2019 and later made Hulu programming available through parts of the Disney+ experience for eligible US subscribers. Hulu still has its own application and plan choices, but bundles can connect it with Disney and ESPN services. The service remains centred on the United States. People outside the country should not assume that a Hulu title or price applies locally. Some Hulu originals are distributed through other Disney services in international markets.

Television, films and originals

Hulu's strongest identity comes from television. Its library includes current-season episodes, complete runs of older shows, licensed series, films, children's programmes and Hulu Originals. Relationships with Disney brands such as ABC, FX, 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures contribute to the catalogue, alongside licensed work from other companies. Availability changes as agreements end and new programmes arrive. Hulu + Live TV is a different kind of product from the basic streaming library. It adds live channels, local availability where supported, cloud recording and sports or news access. Channel line-ups can depend on location. Premium networks can also be added for another fee. This range gives users flexibility, but it makes plan labels important. A programme may be part of basic Hulu, a live channel, a premium add-on or a connected bundle. Newsolite's title links are for discovery and should be confirmed on Hulu before a viewer relies on them.

Advertising, plans and practical checks

Hulu offers different levels of access, including plans with advertising and options described as no ads. Even a no-ads plan can contain advertising in selected live or rights-restricted programmes. Live TV plans cost more because they include channel access in addition to the on-demand library. Bundles and premium add-ons can change the final monthly price. Supported devices include browsers, phones, tablets, smart televisions, streaming players and game consoles. Downloads are available for selected content on eligible plans and mobile devices. Before subscribing, viewers should decide whether they need only on-demand programmes or a replacement for live television. They should check local channel availability, advertising exceptions, simultaneous streams and bundle terms. Prices and trial offers change frequently, so a current official plan page is more reliable than an undated article. International readers should also remember that the US Hulu service is not generally a worldwide subscription.
