In-depth guide

Why ITV replaced ITV Hub

ITV announced ITVX in 2022 as a larger streaming product than ITV Hub. ITV Hub had mainly been known for catching up with television after broadcast. ITVX kept catch-up viewing but added a deeper library, online premieres, themed channels and a stronger focus on discovering programmes inside the streaming service. It officially launched in December 2022. The product uses both advertising and subscriptions: viewers can watch a large amount for free with adverts, while Premium provides a different experience and additional material. ITV also used ITVX to release selected dramas online before their traditional television schedule, making streaming part of the first release rather than only a catch-up tool. Older help pages or device menus may still refer to ITV Hub, but supported services were moved to ITVX. The service remains designed for the United Kingdom, and international rights for ITV programmes are often sold to other broadcasters.

Programmes, films and live channels

ITVX includes drama, documentaries, reality television, comedy, entertainment, films, sport and programmes from ITV's broadcast channels. Users can stream ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4 and ITVBe live on supported devices, subject to location and rights. Themed channels provide a scheduled stream built around a genre, programme or event, which can be useful for viewers who do not want to choose an episode. Box sets and online exclusives make the on-demand library broader than simple recent catch-up. Films and licensed series change as agreements begin and end. Premium access can add extra box sets and reduce advertising, but it does not remove every possible commercial message from live streams. Newsolite links known series for discovery. Free viewing, Premium and regional limits

The free level of ITVX is supported by advertising and requires an account. Premium is intended for viewers who want fewer adverts in on-demand programmes and access to additional content, subject to current terms. Live television can still contain normal broadcast advertising. Downloads and device support depend on the plan and application. ITVX works on common browsers, phones, tablets, smart televisions, streaming devices and game consoles, but supported models can change. A UK television licence is required when watching live television and in other situations covered by UK licensing rules. The service also checks location because most rights are limited to the United Kingdom. Before paying for Premium, viewers should confirm that their favourite programme is included, check download availability and compare the current renewal price. Travellers and international viewers should look for the licensed local distributor rather than assuming ITVX will work outside the UK.
