In-depth guide

Launch and development

NBCUniversal announced Peacock as the name of its streaming service in 2019. The product first became available to eligible Comcast customers in April 2020 and launched nationally in the United States on 15 July 2020. Its original structure included free and paid levels supported by different amounts of advertising and content. The service used NBCUniversal's television and film libraries as a base while adding original productions, live channels, news and sport. Over time, plan availability and prices changed, and the early free access model became less central for new subscribers. Peacock also expanded through agreements with device makers, television providers and content partners. International distribution has taken a different path. In some countries, Peacock programmes appear through Sky or other local services rather than a standalone Peacock application. This means a programme described as a Peacock Original may be available outside the United States without the Peacock subscription itself.

Television, films and live events

Peacock's catalogue reflects the range of NBCUniversal. It includes NBC television, Bravo reality shows, Universal Pictures films, programmes from USA Network, SYFY and other company brands, children's entertainment and a growing group of originals. Older popular series are an important part of the library, while recent NBC episodes can make the service useful for regular television viewers. Live sport and events are another major feature in the United States. The exact competitions change with broadcast rights, and some events may require a higher plan or be limited by location. News streams and themed linear channels give users an experience closer to traditional television alongside on-demand viewing. Film windows and licensing agreements mean the catalogue changes. Newsolite's connected-title section is intended to help users discover programmes associated with Peacock, but it cannot guarantee that a particular title or live event is available at the moment.

Advertising, devices and subscriptions

Peacock was designed around advertising from the beginning, although higher plans can reduce interruptions and add features. Even plans described as mostly ad-free may still show advertising during live channels, sport or selected programmes where rights require it. Downloads, video quality and simultaneous streams depend on the current plan and supported device. The application works through browsers, phones, tablets, many smart televisions, streaming products and game consoles. Before subscribing, viewers should check whether the service is available directly in their country. US users should compare the advertising rules, live content, downloads and any bundle supplied by their internet or television provider. Sports fans should confirm the exact event and season because rights can move. International viewers should search their local broadcaster for Peacock originals rather than assuming that the US application is offered worldwide. Current prices belong on the official plan page because they can change faster than the stable service information in this guide.
