Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson's adventures in 21st Century London. A thrilling, funny, fast-paced contemporary reimagining of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic.
Sherlock is a British mystery series created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, bringing Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories into modern London. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes, while Martin Freeman plays doctor and military veteran John Watson. Most episodes run close to feature length and adapt several original ideas into one contemporary case involving phones, blogs, surveillance and modern policing. Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves, Louise Brealey, Amanda Abbington, Andrew Scott and Gatiss form the continuing group. The series has four main seasons plus a Victorian special, and its stories become more serialised as Sherlock's family and long-term enemies move toward the centre.
Themes and ideas
Observation is useful, but intelligence without empathy can become another form of carelessness. Sherlock often treats emotional distance as proof of clear reasoning, while John and other people reveal how much his work depends on trust. Performance and identity appear throughout the mysteries: clients hide motives, villains create public roles and Sherlock builds a reputation that can trap him. Friendship changes both leads without making them similar. The programme also asks what audiences want from a genius. Spectacular deduction is entertaining, yet later episodes test whether personal connection or increasingly complicated puzzles should define the character.
Dr John Watson returns from service in Afghanistan and finds himself drawn inexorably into the world of the brilliant but baffling 'consulting detective', Sherlock Holmes.
