India and Russia Strengthen Climate Action Partnership
India and Russia have agreed to boost their joint efforts in addressing climate change, aligning with global goals set by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. This agreement was announced following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Focus on Climate Finance and Technology
Both countries will collaborate on developing strategies to improve access to climate finance and technologies for developing nations and economies in transition. Russia is classified as an economy in transition (EIT).
Key areas of cooperation include:
- Mobilizing increased access to climate finance.
- Promoting the development and transfer of environmentally friendly technologies.
Collaboration on Carbon Trading and Low-Carbon Technologies
India and Russia will enhance their dialogue on implementing Article 6 (carbon trade) of the Paris Agreement, fostering the development of low-carbon technologies, and utilizing sustainable finance instruments.
Multilateral Cooperation
The two nations will continue to engage within the G20, BRICS, and SCO frameworks to address climate change. They expressed support for cooperation on climate change issues during India's BRICS chairmanship in 2026.
Joint Working Group
The statement highlighted the successful first meeting of the joint Russia-India working group on climate change and low-carbon development, which took place on September 10 in New Delhi.
